Son of a Gun

When we recently ventured west to check out Patrick Martinez's Lovely Day exhibit, we decided to keep the field trip going and check out Vinny Dotolo and Jon Shook's seafood spot, Son of a Gun.

Entering the restaurant, we instantly felt like we had been transported into a fisherman's nautical-themed cabin, lined with his trophies from the sea.

Since Son of a Gun is tiny and just as popular as Dotolo and Shook's Animal, our spontaneity resulted in a spot on the waitlist, but it led us to some pre-dinner drinks at the bar...An hour and half and a few cocktails later, we were seated at the long communal table. We got to ordering right away!

We love burrata, so we tried the uni and burrata topped with button mushrooms and yuzu -
a unique and delicious combination.

Next up was the amberjack poke serrano, yuzu, orange, white nectarine.
The serrano chili sneaks up on you...in a good way.

The oysters did not disappoint! Served with fresh horseradish, tarter sauce, and
a third condiment we can't remember. (Perhaps we had too many drinks at the bar?)
They were heavenly...so heavenly we ordered a Round 2.

Right about the time the lobster roll came out, we were ready for a heavier, more flavorful dish. Perfect timing. The lobster roll is the most famous dish and rightfully so - the buttery bread topped with lobster in a lemon aioli was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We ordered a second.

It's no secret we love our rooster sauce, so the shrimp toast sandwich with Sriracha mayo was a must try.  Like the lobster roll, the shrimp toast was buttery, full of flavor and packing that
Sriracha punch we love so much.

We didn't know what to expect with this next dish, but the halibut pho turned out to be (arguably) one of the best dish of our dinner. All the flavors of pho that you're used to,
but with halibut and a modern twist.

Lastly, we rounded out our dinner with the blood orange, avocado, spring onion salad -
delicious and refreshing.

Overall, the ambience at Son of a Gun was great and the food even better - definitely worth the wait!
