As part of our quest to try more eastside staples, we recently checked out Mexico City in Los Feliz. We've driven past the space with its neon sign many times, but the thought of spending a lot on Mexican food is a turn off when you live in a city where taco stands and roach coaches are typically the best places to find a traditional and tasty meal. Nevertheless, we've heard great things about it and since taco stands don't serve margaritas or sangria, we figured we need a spot where we can get good Mexican and a good drink.
With it's low lighting and booths, Mexico City has a diner vibe to it. The festive art and modern Mexican murals make for a playful and inviting atmosphere. We were especially diggin' the skull dolls dressed as a mariachi band.
Now on to the good stuff. Like most Mexican restaurants, you get to fill up on tortilla chips and salsa before your food arrives. The salsas that come with the chips are delicious and the flavors were different from the salsa we're used to...in a good way. For our main dishes, we tried the Carnitas Tacos and Spinach Enchiladas. The tacos were definitely the winner of the two, but the Spinach Enchiladas are not a bad option if you want to go meatless. And finally what we really went there for: Sangria. Refreshing and not too sweet, the sangria was spot on. Overall, it was a great meal.

Although we won't be giving up on our beloved $1 taco stands, we can see ourselves meeting friends here for a few
